Spanglish Films fue fundada en el 2005 por Javier Colón Ríos.
Javier Colón comenzó como editor después de terminar su bachillerato en Telecomunicaciones en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC). Durante un verano, Mientras estudiaba el B.A., en asistió a un curso de cine digital en NYFA. Una vez allí, se dio cuenta que su pasión era realmente la dirección. “Cuando uno, como editor, se queja de que no tiene suficiente material para trabajar, entonces uno debe ser el director. Si no, eres un mejor editor y ¡lo arreglas!”, expresó este joven director.
Una vez de vuelta en Puerto Rico, comenzó a dirigir cortometrajes y proyectos privados. Después de su graduación, reconoció que tenía mucho que aprender. Luego solicitó y fue aceptado en el American Film Institute para realizar una maestría en Dirección de Cine. Una de las películas que él dirigió y produjo durante sus estudios de bachillerato, titulada Error 1, le amplió las posibilidades de su futuro de una forma inesperada.
Después de mudarse a Los Ángeles, Colón trabajó en numerosos proyectos como operador de cámara, editor, AP, y por supuesto, director. Una vez allí, tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en la compañía cinematográfica de la actriz y directora Salma Hayek, Ventana Azul, donde colaboró en el área de desarrollo. En el ínterin, él terminó su película de tesis De Pura Cepa, un cortometraje que obtuvo reconocimientos en festivales de todo el mundo, incluyendo Mejor Corto en el Festival de Cine de la Isla Grande de Hawaii. Tras adquirir experiencia en Los Ángeles decidió que era hora de regresar a Puerto Rico.
Ahora en su país, Javier Colón ha dirigido y producido numerosos videos musicales, comerciales, documentales y largometrajes. En mayo pasado, escribió y dirigió su última obra Es Mejor Escucharlo, su primer cortometraje en Puerto Rico. Esta película también ha ganado numerosos premios, incluyendo el Premio Silver Palm en el Festival Internacional de Cine de México y más recientemente fue aceptado en el Festival de Cine de Cannes en el Short Film Corner, donde se adquirió la película para su distribución por Shorts International.
Con oficinas en Santurce, Puerto Rico, Spanglish Films labora en la producción y dirección de películas de ficción y documentales, así como producción y dirección de comerciales y videos musicales.
Spanglish Films was founded in 2005 by Javier Colón Ríos.
Javier Colón started as a freelance editor after finishing up his B.A. in telecommunications from the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC). While studying, he took a summer off and went to NYFA where he attended a digital filmmaking course. While there, he realized that his passion was really directing. “When you as an editor are complaining that you don’t have enough material to work with, you should be a director, if not become a better editor and fix it!”, said this young director.
Once back in Puerto Rico, he started directing small short films and private projects. After graduation, he recognized that he had a lot to learn. Then he applied and got accepted in the American Film Institute to do a Master in Film Directing. One of the small films that he directed and produced on his B.A Error 1, opened up his future in a way that he wasn’t expecting.
After moving to Los Angeles, Colón worked on numerous projects as camera operator, editor, P.A., and of course, director. While there, he had the opportunity to worked in Ventana Azul, Salma Hayek’s film company, where he collaborated in the area of development. On the meantime, he finished up his thesis film “De Pura Cepa” a short film that got recognitions in festivals around the world, including winning Best Foreign Short at the Big Island Film Festival in Hawaii. After gaining experience in Los Angeles he decided that it was time to go back to Puerto Rico.
Now in his country, Javier Colón has directed and produced numerous music videos, commercials, documentaries and now is working on features films. Last May, he wrote and directed his last work Es Mejor Escucharlo, his first short film in Puerto Rico. This movie also has won numerous prizes including the Silver Palm Award in the Mexico International Film Festival and most recently was accepted in the Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner, where the film got acquired for distribution by Shorts International.
With offices in Santurce, Puerto Rico; Spanglish Films is now working in their feature films and documentaries, and also producing and directing commercials and music videos.
